i never do this (portrait of a kitchen)

My sister (The Nester) recently blogged about my kitchen redo. What a novel idea, thought I. Who doesn't love a good before and after? She often writes of window treatments and her love of fabric (that she has so graciously passed onto me). I don't usually write about this type of thing, but with it being my kitchen and all, I thought it could be fun to post some significant shots of it before the love and after the love. So here we go. This was our kitchen on move in day, August of 2005.Please notice the lovely shade of dark mauve under the chair rail. Oh, and the sponging. What self-respecting woman in the early 90's didn't love a good sponged wall?
The bones of this kitchen were great, I thought. It just needed a little love.
And love it we did. First, we painted the kitchen Ivoire from Sherwin Williams. Actually, first we replaced the stove, but that's not as fun to talk about. Then we lived with it for a while. I talked a lot with The Nester about what I wanted to do in the kitchen. She encouraged me to look through magazines and find photos of what I really liked, realistic or not. It helped to think this way and get a feel for what my likes are. Sometimes I have a hard time with that. Then, I found this, my inspiration photo:
It's actually an ad for that stuff that's on the ceiling, but I didn't care about that. I noticed that the walls were the same color as mine and those cabinets looked great! And it also made me want a dog. And a friend. And coffee. But whatever.

I knew we couldn't replace the cabinets, so I just had to choose what color I wanted them to be. I decided black was the only way to go. I also liked the fact that the black made our dishwasher disappear. So we hired a friend to do the dirty work (you didn't think I did this all myself, did you?) and off we went. We also replaced the sink and the countertops, which was by far our biggest expense. Add a subway tile backsplash and here is the final product.
And another one with my butcher block/island included.

Here is a close up of the window treatment. I picked out the fabric and The Nester helped me hang it. I'll let her reveal her secrets. Let me just say it cost $10.
I found these bubbled glass knobs at Anthropologie. Love. Them. Oh, and by the way, we do have a refrigerator. I just had no before shots from that angle so I didn't bother taking any after shots of it either. Incase you were wondering.

Let's see that one more time, shall we?
We do have to replace our off white outlets with white ones, but other than that, we're pretty much finished. Now if we only had a dog...

I would have been nervous to do the black cabinets - but they look incredible! The whole kitchen looks great ... and $10 window treatments - I would have never thought ... !

Sister, I had forgotten about the changes in the breakfast area! That awful light! Your beautiful plantation shutters! Now instead of stressing out by being in a loud kitchen, one can relax and enjoy your delish bread.

I think a pretty kitchen even makes food taste better!

Love you girl!

I saw your kitchen on Today's Creative Blog and had to come check it out. LOVE it! So simply elegant :)
And I'm dying to know more about the $10 window treatments...do tell!

I actually wanted to say that I'm touched by your relationship with your sister, and the things you each write about your families. It sounds like you are both absolutely beautiful women. I'm fairly new to North Carolina, and my husband and I just bought our first home, so if you and your sis would like to have a decorating frenzy on the living room that I can't seem to find a style for, my home is game! --jenny

Feels like I got a two for one on the Today's Creative Blog thing :)! I love pictures of decorating, but I also love humorous, realistic writing. Score!

Your kitchen looks simply wonderful! I was the TCB feature last Thursday and was mortified by the pictures of my kitchen up. I love it and all, but I saw in those photos every last thing I still wanted to fix or touch up. I can't find a single flaw in yours! Lucky girl ;)!

hmmmm.....had a few spare more spare minutes and read to the bottom of the page. Yup. You're brilliantly funny with lots of the same thoughts I have, only expressed better.

I'm linking you and that's that! (actually, if you prefer not to be linked, just let me know. But I run with a pretty safe circle of blogging girls).

Thanks for making me laugh!

it's great! i want to get up the nerve to paint my cabinets. right after we moved in they stared chipping terribly. they are off white and they show every little drop of nesquick. black is intriguing but it would also require a countertop replacement because my countertops are black right now.

Wow, you really got your inspiration from that picture, I think you got it right on! minus the friends and the dog that are missing~
Please don't get a dog, just because they look sweet. We had two dogs and gave each away with each child that came home with us.

Love your kitchen! Would you mind me asking where you got the cute little island?

Thanks!
Teri

Hi Teri!
I looked everywhere for an island that was a butcher block on top and most of them were either ugly or way to big for my kitchen. If our fridge, dishwasher and oven doors are all open (which they never would be, but you know) then an island makes it pretty tight. I found this one at Regan's Furniture Choices. They have a website: furniturechoices.com
Check it out! They have great stuff and not just unfinished stuff but sofas and beds and everything. Good luck!

I have the same cabinets and have been wondering about what to do with them. I have switched to black/stainless appliances and was going to go with a black granite countertop. Now I am thinking about painting them black and going with a natural colored granite top. Your kitchen looks great and I am excited to begin my own.

Found you via the fabulous window treatment tutorial!

May I just say that you have inspired a white-kitchen-lover to do black in the next house?!?

beautiful!
can you tell me the color of your granite ? and where you got it from? it looks so nice with the black...
i could move right in!
great job on the redo!

thanks!

granite is gallio ornamental...we did pick out the actual slab. I know some granites with the same name look very different compared with each other just because, well, its like rock. Which is kind of amazing, actually. If you want more details, email me!

What a beautiful kitchen! I am in the middle of re-doing mine also and was wondering if the black cabinets show a lot of smudges and fingerprints? I just bought black dining chairs and am constantly wiping them down. Also, did you use satin or semi-gloss? i am currently painting my upper cabinets with SW pearly white semi-gloss, and am thinking of painting the lower cabs black to match my appliances.
Thanks!

emily freeman said...

Hi Stephanie-
We have a black dining room table as well and I'm with you...the constant cleaning of it makes me a little nuts. I haven't noticed it as much with the cabinets maybe just because we don't like, eat off them.

Oh, and it is a semi-gloss paint. I love the way it sheens but doesn't shine, you know?

Thanks for the reply, Emily!
I may just go for the black lower cabinets. Yours have left me inspired!

Hi, beautiful kitchen, I want to repaint my cabinets, did you have to sand all that stain all the way down to the wood? Can I paint black over my stain do you think?

the kitchen looks fabulous. Our new house has the oak cabinets which I would love to paint but I am nervous about doing it. I have this feeling the paint will chip and then it will look cruddy. Did you have any experience with that? Did you use latex or oil?

Im a lover of black and your black cabinets have inspired me! In my 30 yr old kitchen, the previous owner painted the cabinets an almond color (to match the appliances). Some of them are getting badly scratched up - I think black would be a perfect remedy! I'm trying to figure out if they would look good distressed. I'm also going to do black bead board (check out my blog for a picture - http://yoderfam.blogspot.com/2008/07/ive-been-inspired.html). Any tips you may have on keeping it clean would be great! Thanks!

Hi Emily,

Your cabinets look wonderful! What I would like to know is whether the painter sprayed or brushed the paint on? They almost look sprayed because the finish has a fine look. Very nice. Was a clear coat added to enhance and protect the paint? The knobs make a huge difference and yours are the perfect fit.

I can only imagine the delight you feel to view the before and after pictures. What a transformation! I did the same thing to my kitchen, only my cabinets are white.

I'm currently addicted to black spray paint (in the good way), so I love your cabinets. And I have that same fabric in my boy's room, so does that make us twins?

I got the curtains pre-made at Target. They have the coolest curtains, but a limited selection.

Enjoying your blog.... I'm adding it to my sidebar today.

I just happened to come across your blog and I'm in LOVE!!! Could you please tell me what kind of paint and primer you used on your kitchen cabinets? I've wanted to paint mine black for so long and was scared to death, but seeing yours has given me courage!!! Thanks so much!!
