sweet veggie tales

I went to the grocery store tonight. I came home with these and piled them on my counter.
It made me so happy to see all those fresh veggies waiting to be fed to my family. It also made me remember this wasn't the first pile of veggies I've seen today.
I've actually been to the store twice. My first trip was this morning in my kitchen with two sweet little cashiers. And they didn't even make me pay.

Our mornings aren't always so fun and creative. But today, it just was. As I watched my girls pretend to shop at the grocery store, I thought about how they were imagining themselves to be real mommies with real babies at a real store. They were pretending to be me.

I kept waiting for them to snap at their baby dolls or shove a pretend cookie in their little pretend mouths. Of course, their pretend babies didn't whine. But still. They were sweet and kind and patient. They were good mommies.

What an incredible responsibility it is to have a little audience all day, everyday, watching your every move. That is why on days like this, I can't help but be thankful that somehow they are able to see beyond my faults and learn from me anyway.

Reading this made me remember when our youngest daughter played with her Barbies. I would hear 'myself' scolding the Barbie dolls or complimenting them, depending on how my daughter viewed my actions that day. It was indeed a most humbling experience!! and I began watching what I said and how I reacted to situations! ;)

I have always loved how tender my boys' hearts are, that they are so forgiving! I could learn a lot from my boys!

What an important reminder. I love your insight, Emily. Just yesterday I was trying to explain good and bad attitudes to my 5-year-old son. He told me, "you always have a good atitude." Oh, man, I'm so glad he thinks so because that so ain't true.

Ohhh that is too sweet. It is so true that our young ones are always watching. I always strive (don't always make it) to keep the sweet, calm, good natured temperament that my daughter exhibits.

I love watching my girls play with their baby dolls. Sometimes having all those little eyes trained on me is overwhelming, but then I see them pretending and being such good "mommies" and it makes me smile.

I have boys, so they don't often pretend to be me - but many's the time I've heard an ugly "tone" out of my oldest and wondered where he heard that from. Then it hits me. Yeah.

It can be overwhelming to think how much they watch me and imitate me. There are days when I am so thankful that they are quick to forgive and seem to have short memories.

It is also an amazing priviledge to be their mommy, to get to watch them play, pretend and grow.

This is so very true. You do not even realize how much they soak in until you hear yourself repeated back to you. I have to admit - it has stopped me in my tracks a few times. I often think, what an awesome responsibility the Lord has given us to mold these little people he has blessed us with.

Great post, Emily. My boys are grown now, but the relationship I share with them is the sweetest blessing... and it's filled with those little moments. It's great that you learn from them as well.

I wonder why God hasn't given me little girls? My boys mimic me sometimes, but it's not nearly so cute!

It always amazes me that my son tells me all the time that I'm the best Momma in the world. Doesn't he know that there are Mommies out there who don't yell at their kids, don't get impatient, and spend all the time they need to with their precious children? I'm so thankful he sees beyond my imperfections!

It is amazing that God has intrusted us to raise these little bitty kiddos for him. I pray daily that I don't mess them up too bad. Thanks for the reminder that they are always watching.
Blessings,
Linda

this is so so so beautiful. I only hope I can remember how much my children look up to me as they grow into teens. ugh.

I am glad you are taking the time now when they still want to spend it with you. They grow out of that unfortunately but then new ways to bond come up which are nice too.

Have a good week.

Ah, the sweet and unconditional love of little children. You must be a good and loving mommy. Enjoy it now, when they hit their teen years, well, lets just say it ain't the same.
