Now that we have less than 3 weeks until we move, I revel in seeing any kind of progress over at our new house. I haven't popped in over there for the past few days to get some distance from the whole thing.
Turns out it's true what they say about absence and the heart growing fonder (as The Nester recently reminded me). I guess regular people would apply that to relationships. But it works in this case, too...as it has been encouraging and exciting to see the personality of our new/old house begin to take shape. This tulip only recently came out to greet us and I'm so glad she did. Isn't she lovely?
Another exciting development has been in the door department. The house was kind of in a door identity crisis when we bought it. Many of the doors were beautiful, like this one in the foyer next to the stairs.
And these, leading into the sunroom.
But all the other doors were just...doors. Flat, no panel, hollow doors. Nothing really wrong with that. Were they functional? Yes. Did they have personality? Not so much. They served their purpose faithfully for a very long time. But after hanging around for 45 years, they seemed a bit tired. So we gave them a face-lift. Actually, I guess it was more like a transplant.
They weren't flown in on a chopper and delivered in a red cooler, but their arrival was exciting just the same.
There it is, in all it's new-door glory. The one on the right is still the old one so you can compare. I think they change the feel of the whole house. What a difference a door makes. Replacing them was such a treat. It wasn't a requirement that we do it. All things considered, we decided it was one of those things that would make a big difference that was worth it to us. And don't forget how tired those old doors were. Worn out, they were. It was the kind thing to do.

the doors look awesome and they made such a HUGE difference! I love them! We are putting the same kind of doors (with the arch) in our new house. I think they make the ceilings seem higher! Anyway - I love the tulip, and the doors! See you Friday night! Save us a spot on the lawn if you get there before we do!
Gorgeous! Also, can I just say I am totally lovin' your new blog look. Hmmm...maybe I need to look into getting a "Fairy Blog-mother" myself... ;o)
they look great. can't wait to see you all moved in.
Excellent work. Those old ones had to go--it's so funny because the previous owners had all that custom work around the windows and cabinetry but then those plain jane doors.
Tired or not, those doors needed to go. Even if you live there for 50 years, you will get a return in two ways--YOU will enjoy them every single day, the next buyer will not wonder why the house seems so dated but not be able to put their finger on it!
YOU DID GREAT!
Beautiful! It is the little things that makes such a huge difference. I have those same doors in my house. We built it last spring and moved in July. I'm telling you, your house makes me want to sell and go buy an older house. I COVET THY HOUSE! (Shhh...don't tell anyone). :-)
Wowee love the change. Good choice.
Love your new doors. I think it looks much better. What did you decide with the cabinets in your den? Did you leave those older doors or just take them out? Cant wait to see when you get all moved in... Take care, Susie h
They do look great! And the tulip great gift from God just for you and any of us that knows and appreciates that his timing is perfect! He does things like that for me just when I need them.
I love you blog and your sister. You make me want to re-do my whole house! The things you are doing are awesome!
Love the doors! They make such a difference. So, do tell....What color is your paint? Tobacco Road??
Also, what color is the sunroom. It all looks like it's coming along great.
May I ask, is the paint color in the hallways the famous "Tobacco Road"? I love how it looks!
Oops, someone else already asked! :)
Yes, the paint color in the hallway is Tobacco Road. It kind of takes on a different look in every room...which I love. And the sunroom color (as well as our bedroom color) is Oyster Bay, for you who asked.
I will post a photo of the fireplace wall when it is done. Thanks for liking my house :)
I'm jealous. My house has--guess what?--hollow, flat, ugly doors, but at least someone painted white over the orignial hideous brown. But ours are 47 years old and even more tired. Your new ones look lovely. Maybe I need to resume my campaign on my husband for new doors. I'll use your house as an example.
Welp, I guess I'm done lurking! This is a BIG "coming out" Day for me!! Bummer, right before I leave for 5 days. When I get home, it will take me another couple of months to get the nerve up :0 So, YOOUU get to go to church with Daughtry!! Wow, YOU are the one that is big time! Didn't know who he was a week ago and now I canNOT get enough of his music! I make my boys put on their headphones and I CRANK up the volume and sing at the top of my lungs! I should sing back up for him...will you tell him I'm great! (Of course, I'm kidding!) But, you don't know me, so I just wanted you to know I wasn't asking for favors :) But I CAN sing some harmony! Wow, what a day, I feel so, um, popular! Okay, you guys have inspired to learn about this stinkin' computer so I can make my blog all cutesy and cozy. Might give your girl a try?? So, as I mentioned to The Nester, I have a little trouble rambling, hence, one of the reasons I don't comment! But, couple of quick things...LOVE your new house and what all you are doing with it. Spectacular! Your family is beautiful and I know exactly what you mean when you say you struggle with trying to be amazing and perfect all the time. What a huge amount of pressure we bestow upon ourselves!!?? So hard to just breathe and let things go some time, but that's what I'm learning to do. We had a little "bout" of cancer 2 months ago and that really puts everything into perspective. Thanks so much for your comment, I so enjoy just getting a glimpse into your life! The blog world is an AMAZING thing! This has truly been a GREAT day thanks in part to you and your sister!
how fun! Makes me want to do a project with doors :)
New doors for our 1950s ranch with hollow-cores is BIG on my wish list. I, too, want two-paneled but square on top...like you asked, but there it is. :)
You new old house is looking great! Good luck with the move.
We'd love to change the flat hollow doors in our '65 Ranch some day. Do you recommend a Lowes or Home Depot perchance for the materials for this spruce-up?
Hi Tricia,
I hope you find this comment as I don't know how to get in touch with you...but I got our doors at Lowes. I didn't even look at Home Depot. I'm sure they are comprable there, though. New doors make a huge difference so I think it will be worth it where ever your go!
